Tracing Milan Šufflay’s Hungarian Connections: MEDHRID Research in Budapest

06.11.2026.

As part of the MEDHRID project, external collaborator Frano Bilić, a researcher of the Centre for Croatian, Venetian and Ottoman Studies at the University of Split, conducted a research stay in Budapest from 20 September to 24 October 2026.

His research was carried out in the archives and libraries of the following institutions: the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Magyar Tudományos Akadémia, MTA), the National Archives of Hungary (Magyar Nemzeti Levéltár), the National Széchényi Library (Országos Széchényi Könyvtár), and the University Library and Archives of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE, Egyetemi Könyvtár és Levéltár).

The main objective of the research was to gain a deeper understanding of Milan Šufflay’s connections with Hungarian academic and political circles and how these connections directly influenced the formation of his unionist views. Particular attention was paid to his correspondence with Hungarian colleagues, especially historians Lajos Thallóczy and Gyula Szekfű, as well as literary historian József Bajza.

In addition, Bilić consulted a selection of documents shedding light on the still insufficiently researched activities of the Croatian Committee and the Croatian Legion in exile in the years immediately following the First World War.
