Associate Professor Edi Miloš of the Department of History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split, conducted his second research visit to France from 29 June to 12 July 2026 as part of the MEDHRID project.
During his stay, he visited the French National Archives (Archives nationales) in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, where he examined archival materials relating to the Marseille assassination, specifically the records of the Ministry of the Interior. His research focused primarily on the subseries dedicated to the Directorate of National Security (Direction de la Sûreté nationale), which contains a substantial portion of the surviving documentation on the official investigation into the assassination of King Alexander on 9 October 1934, the pursuit of the suspects, and the trial of those charged with the crime.
Professor Miloš then travelled to Nantes, home to one of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs’ diplomatic archives (Archives diplomatiques). There, he began examining the records of the French Legation in Belgrade and the French Consulate in Zagreb from the interwar period. These materials provide valuable insight into the views of French diplomats stationed in Yugoslavia regarding the political crisis that simultaneously affected Paris and Belgrade following the violent death of the controversial Serbian monarch. The newly identified primary sources will support the preparation of scholarly publications on various aspects of Franco-Croatian relations during the 1930s.
