While Croatian as a recipient language has been studied, very few works consider Croatian as a donor language, with only one focusing on direct loanwords into English. This research will document loanwords in English that reflect traces of Croatian language and culture, transmitted via other languages. The study addresses the underexplored influence of Croatian as a cultural and commercial mediator in the Mediterranean, which indirectly shaped English. Its interdisciplinary approach combines philological, historical, and cultural perspectives on language transfer. The project will also geographically map the movement of these loanwords through European languages into English, a task not systematically undertaken before. By emphasizing Mediterranean and European cultural connections, the study broadens understanding of Croatian cultural heritage internationally. Methodologically, the research will conduct a philological analysis to examine the etymological origins of lexemes that entered English indirectly from Croatian; use discourse analysis to show where these lexemes appear in English; apply corpus analysis to determine the frequency and distribution of Croatian loanwords in English; statistically interpret their presence across different historical periods.

The project activity conducted by Anđela Milinović Hrga, Associate Professor, aims to analyse and document Croatian-origin loanwords in English that entered the language indirectly through military, commercial, cultural, and other contacts.
